CNNMoney.com rated Piedmont one of the top 25 Earning towns and stated that it protects its largely residential feel from its neighbors. With rows of mansions and beautiful tree lined streets, Piedmont earned its status as the ´city of Millionaires" in the 1920˙s when it had the most millionaires per square mile of anywhere in the United States. Low crime and highly desired school system have continued to make this one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods in the Bay Area. Many of the large homes were built around the turn of the 20th century and exude elegance and grace. In 1907 when the city of Oakland was incorporating there were 2 elections which both just narrowly upheld the city of Piedmont becoming a separate city rather than a neighborhood in Oakland.
